In the early 1900s, Pleasure Pier was a major attraction, luring visitors from throughout Texas.� At various times the Island had a 2,000 foot boardwalk, ballroom, midway, roller coaster, skating rink, bowling alley, and Olympic-sized swimming.

Major stars and musicians of the day such as Harry James, Tommy Dorsey, Sammy Kaye, and Benny Goodman regularly appeared at the ballroom and drew thousands of visitors.
